This section, at least for this rider and this time of the year, was a rather adventurous choice. In early June it had sections of deep (1 foot) water and thick mud 6-8". Running water made the steep shale and rock strewn sections a challenge on my 700 x 42c gravel tires. Perhaps a more skilled rider might have been able to ride 95-100% of it even under these conditions. I managed to stay in the saddle for about 85% of it (traveling west- more uphill). Wished I had my beefier 650b's for this section. I highly recommend having good bug repellent, watch for the poison ivy, if you're susceptible, and do a good tick check when you get to the more open road at the end. Would I do it again? You bet. It is the ultimate in Berkshire's remoteness- a bear bell is a good idea if you don't want to surprise one. The "power lines" are more like old telephone poles from the 1930's snaking their way through the woods. It would be a fabulous ride on dry fall day before the leaves have fallen off the trees. In midsummer just know you probaly won't gather enough speed to outrun the deer flies, mosquitoes and black flies and be prepared to get your shoes wet.
Very unmaintained - a level beyond a jeep track. Wear bug spray.
